This week I’m reviewing the JC Newman Angel Cuesta Robusto, a cigar with serious history behind it. Originally produced over 100 years ago for Angel Lamadrid Cuesta—one of the founders of the Cuesta Rey brand—this blend is a true throwback. Today, it’s handcrafted in the American Room at the JC Newman factory, and we’re one of only a handful of shops in the entire state of Florida lucky enough to carry it. This is a very limited release.

Before lighting up, the dry draw immediately impressed me with sweet, floral undertones layered with a subtle molasses note, setting the stage for what I knew would be a great smoke. Once lit, the first few puffs and the retrohale continued that sweetness, now leaning more into caramel and molasses, with a clean tobacco note lingering on the finish.

As the cigar opened up, touches of pepper and leather began to emerge, adding depth without overpowering the profile. About an inch in, the flavors expanded further with cedar and nutty notes joining the mix. The cigar then transitioned back to its sweeter roots—molasses returned, followed briefly by a light hint of cinnamon, before settling once again into soft floral tones.

Strength-wise, this cigar stays on the milder to medium side, but the flavor complexity keeps it engaging throughout. While transitions slowed in the latter portion, I continued to pick up a satisfying balance of sweet and savory notes, with subtle hints of sunflower seeds lingering on the palate.

The finish was just as enjoyable as the start—smooth, semi-sweet, and completely free of bitterness. Overall, this was a fantastic smoking experience from start to finish. If you’re a fan of nuanced, well-balanced cigars with a rich backstory, this is one you absolutely don’t want to miss. Stop in and give it a try—you won’t regret it.
